At Surrogacy Mentor, one of the most common questions we’re asked is: “Can I become a surrogate if I’m LGBTQ+?” The short answer? Absolutely.

LGBTQ+ Surrogates Are Welcome—and Needed
Modern surrogacy is about creating families through compassion and connection. We believe that your capacity to care is not defined by your sexual orientation.
At Surrogacy Mentor, we work with inclusive agencies and clinics that prioritize who you are as a person—your motivations, health, and support system—rather than who you love or how you identify.
Who Can Become a Surrogate?
Whether you identify as lesbian, bisexual, queer, or transgender, the core qualifications for becoming a surrogate remain the same. Most agencies and clinics will require that you:
Are between 21 and 42 years old
Have given birth at least once and are raising or have raised your own child
Have had a healthy pregnancy and delivery and are medically able to have future healthy pregnancies
Are a non-smoker and live in a smoke-free home
Have a healthy BMI (typically under 32)
Are financially stable
Have no significant mental health diagnoses or substance use history
Pass a criminal background check
If you meet these requirements, your sexual orientation or gender identity will not be a disqualifying factor.

What About LGBTQ+ Surrogates in Same-Sex Relationships?
Being in a same-sex relationship or marriage has no bearing on whether you can be a surrogate. The most important thing is that your partner is on board and supportive, regardless of their gender. In fact, our Founder, Carey, was married for 18 years to her wife and completed a successful surrogacy and founded a successful surrogacy during that time! Many intended parents and agencies are thrilled to work with those who already understand the beauty of alternative family building.
Tips for LGBTQ+ Surrogates
Here are a few ways to ensure a smooth journey:
🌈 Choose an inclusive agency or mentor.
Work with organizations—like those vetted by Surrogacy Mentor—that have demonstrated inclusive practices and experience working with LGBTQ+ surrogates.
🌈 Advocate for yourself.
If you ever feel uncertain or uncomfortable with how you're treated, know that you have the right to speak up or switch to professionals who respect and support your identity.
🌈 Surround yourself with support.
Connect with other surrogates (LGBTQ+ or not) to share your journey, ask questions, and get encouragement. Community makes all the difference.
Final Thoughts
If you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community and you feel called to become a surrogate, know that your journey is not only possible—it’s welcome. What matters most is your commitment to helping a family grow, your health, and your readiness to take on the unique responsibilities of surrogacy.
At Surrogacy Mentor, we believe surrogates come in all identities, backgrounds, and life experiences. And we’re here to support you—every step of the way.
