FAQs
About Surrogacy Mentor
What does Surrogacy Mentor do?
We guide qualified women through the process of becoming a surrogate by connecting them with safe, ethical, and supportive agencies that match your unique needs.
Why should I work with Surrogacy Mentor instead of applying directly to an agency?
With hundreds of surrogacy agencies out there, it can be overwhelming to find the right one for you. We cut through the confusion, evaluate your qualifications, and match you with trusted, reputable agencies so you can ensure your journey is in good hands.
Does Surrogacy Mentor charge anything for using our service?
No. Our guidance and matching services are completely free to surrogates.
Eligibility & Qualifications
Who can become a surrogate?
Most agencies require surrogates to be between 21-42 years old, have at least one healthy child of their own, a BMI under 30, no smoking history, and good overall health. You can read our full list of requirements here.
I’ve had a C-section. Am I still eligible?
Yes, in most cases women with under three previous C-sections are eligible, as long as they had healthy pregnancies and recoveries.
Can LGBTQ+ women or plus-size women apply to be surrogates?
Absolutely. We support women of all backgrounds and identities, and we’ll help you find an agency that values and respects you.
The Surrogacy Process
What happens after I apply with Surrogacy Mentor?
Our team will review your application, confirm your qualifications, and set up time to meet one-on-one with our Mentors via video call. Together, we’ll discuss your desired journey, matching criteria, and special requests to build your surrogate profile. During this time, we will also collect your medical records and make sure you are cleared, so you can start your journey from the moment you match.
Once your profile is established, we’ll leverage our relationships and expertise to personally connect you with an agency that’s best fit for your needs.
How long does it take to get matched with an agency?
Every surrogate’s journey is unique, but most qualified women are matched within a few weeks to a couple of months.
What is the screening process like?
Agencies typically require medical history reviews, psychological evaluations, and background checks to ensure safety for both you and the intended parents. We help you get pre-approved through our own screening process, making your journey start faster once you match with your family and agency.
Do I get to choose the intended parents I work with?
Yes. Surrogates and intended parents meet and agree to move forward only if both sides feel comfortable.
Legal & Ethical Considerations
Is surrogacy legal in my state?
Surrogacy laws vary by state. Part of our role is ensuring you’re connected with agencies that understand and follow your state’s specific legal requirements.
We do not take surrogates from Louisiana and Nebraska only, where surrogacy is either criminalized or extremely difficult to conduct safely.
How do I know if an agency is ethical?
We only partner with agencies that meet high standards of transparency, support, and safety. We help you avoid scams and unsafe practices. Our company is a member of the Society for Ethics in Egg Donation and Surrogacy (SEEDS), the largest governing body for ethics and safety in surrogacy agencies in the nation.
Will I have my own lawyer during the process?
Yes. A qualified attorney experienced in surrogacy will represent your interests, and intended parents typically cover the cost.
Compensation & Practical Questions
How much do surrogates get paid?
Compensation varies by agency, location, and experience, but first-time surrogates usually receive $30,0000-$60,000 depending on state and qualifications, plus additional allowances.
When does compensation start?
Payments generally begin after pregnancy is confirmed with a heartbeat. Your agency will provide a full breakdown of when and how payments are made.
Do I need health insurance to become a surrogate?
Not necessarily. Agencies ensure that either your insurance qualifies, or they will secure a surrogacy-friendly plan at no cost to you.
What happens if medical complications arise?
Ethical agencies have clear plans for medical care and financial protections in case of complications. We’ll help you connect with agencies that prioritize your safety and make sure communication stays transparent and clear.
Lifestyle & Family
How will surrogacy affect my own family?
Agencies encourage open conversations with your partner and children. We can share resources to help you explain surrogacy to your loved ones, including our blog.
Can I work or travel while being a surrogate?
In most cases, yes. You can maintain a normal lifestyle with some restrictions during treatment and pregnancy. The nature of your pregnancy is discussed during the matching phase between you and the intended parents. Your doctor and agency will also provide guidance.
What support systems are in place for surrogates?
Surrogates receive medical, emotional, and logistical support from their agency, intended parents, and often a community of other surrogates. We make sure you’re matched with an agency that will truly support you.
Surrogates have a range of requests in support. In our experience, some women prefer hands-off, self-guided journeys, while others prefer a team they can lean on. Some women do not value a strong relationship with their intended parents, and others see that as central to a fulfilling journey. We help you find exactly what you’re looking for through our meetings and profile development.
